I accidentally dropped my new iPhone from pocket height onto a tiled floor (can you guess where?) Result: screen shot to bits!
Headed into the Apple shop and had it all replaced and operational with no questions asked within 1 hour. Impressive service, but then it needs to be with fragility like this.
All previous phones I have owned handled this sort of accident or a lot worse without crapping out.
Bottom Line: iPhone is fragile

Treat yourself to a nice leather holder. Mine came with one when I got it and i've lost count how many times i've dropped it onto concrete to be pleasantly surprised it had not shatered.
